I Heard This: Serge Gainsbourg

I'm a little obsessed with Serge Gainsbourg at the moment. Digging through his back catalog and the seemingly bottomless well of Youtube clips is a pleasing distraction from the fact that we seem to be experiencing the most unpleasant winter weather I can ever remember.

I seem to have a new favorite song every day and this is Friday's installment: "Cargo Cutie," a decidedly dark, down-tempo dirge that is a refreshing contrast to some of his more frothy French pop moments:

Incidentally, I'm far from alone with this Gainsbourg thing; the list of artists reworking his songs over the last few years is pretty stunning. Most recently, the Arcade Fire have started covering "Poupee de cire, poupee de son" during their shows. Unsurprisingly, covering this infamous incest anthem doesn't seem to be at the top of anyone's list (maybe that task would be best left to this guy, who brings his satanic sideshow to the Paramount on February 18).
