Red Wine & Mark Knopfler in July

Knopfler2.jpg

My inbox just got the best news it's received in awhile: Mark Knopfler will be playing Chateau Ste. Michelle on July 2 (tix on sale a week from today). Knopfler, of Dire Straits fame, is one of those artists who, along with the likes of Tom Petty, rarely gets his due (although, thanks to Peter Bogdanovich and the Super Bowl, Petty seems to be getting his now). Aside from Jerry Garcia, Knopfler might have the most instantly recognizable playing style in the realm of guitar (although there are times when Richard Thompson sounds similar — must be something in the Channel), and his voice — almost a Dylan-esque growl — is similarly inimitable. An Officer and a Gentleman would not have been the movie it was without the climactic inclusion of "Tunnel of Love" during Gere and Winger's awkward final act encounter in TJ's Bar. Knopfler's rangy as hell, and should not be missed.
