Clarification: Stephen John Kalinich

friends.jpg

Over the weekend, I received a couple of emails about the piece I wrote on Stephen John Kalinich. One thing that was brought to my attention is that I wasn't clear in my intro graf about the origins of the song-poem "Be Still". I wrote that Kalinich wrote the poem in the 60s and it was then set to music by his friend Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys.

To clarify, Kalinich originally co-wrote "Be Still" with Brian's brother Dennis Wilson and it was included on the Beach Boys' 1968 album Friends. Dennis played organ on that, as well.

As Kalinich told me, he felt the lyrics to "Be Still" needed to be expanded, so he wrote more, and reworked the poem-song for his own A World of Peace Must Come. This is the version I was referencing in my intro graf...the one he recorded with Brian Wilson playing organ.

Sorry for the confusion!

Oh, and while we're at it, Kalinich and Dennis wrote more songs together, some of which you can hear on Dennis' recently reissued Pacific Ocean Blue...

Hello,

Thanks to Brian J. Barr for the article and the clarification. I'm the weekend emailer he refers to — I just wanted Dennis Wilson to get his due as co-writer of the original "Be Still" on 1968's "Friends" by The Beach Boys. Another great, and more melodic, Dennis/Kalinich collaboration on that album is "Little Bird". "Friends" is one of Brian Wilson's favourites of the Beach Boys albums. Let's hear it for Dennis, Kalinich, and the boys. (Dennis played drums, piano, and keyboards, and wrote and sang.)
