Monday Show Suggestions

Overkill, El Corazon

It's official: Mondays are the crappiest day of the week for showgoing. Nonetheless, there are a couple interesting things going on aside from the usual suspects (Soul City Mondays are always a good standby).

Grudge Rock, Part One, Re bar, 9 p.m.

Re-bar hosts its very first Grudge Rock session tonight, in which two bands face off in a Family Feud-style music trivia beatdown in competition for all the door money. Yes, both bands will also play music. This first session features Steel Tigers of Death versus Android Hero. Do Steel Tigers know more about music than Androids? We'll find out.

Overkill, Warbringer, Epicurean, H.M.P., Hatefist, El Corazon, 7 p.m., $25

Michael Alan Goldberg on Overkill:
Shredders, rejoice! Some 28 years after first forming, New Jersey quintet Overkill remains 100-percent true to the old-school thrash-metal that one-time labelmates Metallica abandoned long ago, and Anthrax feebly tries to maintain despite hiring a new lead singer every other week. Not that Overkill hasn't had its share of line-up changes over the years (awesomely named drummer Rat Skates is long departed), but founding singer Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth and bassist D.D. Verni are still around. Overkill's toured fairly regularly in recent years, though more in Europe and Japan than in America (or so it seems), and they're coming around these parts in support of 15th album Immortalis, issued last year. As always, they mash the metal of Motorhead and Priest to the punk of the Pistols and Dead Boys, keeping things fast, loud, and brutal.

Maldives, Jack Wilson & the Wife Stealers, Spoonshine, Sunset Tavern, 9 p.m., $6

You could also go get a little country with the Maldives and Jack Wilson & the Wife Stealers, who are playing every Monday at the Sunset this month.
