Dreaming with Grynch

What could make the soul smile more in these financially neurotic times than free music? I say not much. One of music’s functions is to provide a respite, however temporary, from the ebb and flow of life, fraught as it is with overdue bills, traffic jams, and nasty emails. Another function of music is to provide inspiration, to sustain us not so much with tidings and good cheer, but with the knowledge that there are others struggling in the great beyond and wishing upon a star, too.

Forgive my didacticism--you already know this shit--but I’ve been thrust into a state of narcotic reverie by local son and MC Grynch’s new EP, Something More, which he’s generously offered up for free here. As I write, I’m listening to the sincere but thankfully not saccharine jam “I’m a Dreamer,” the hook for which contains the polite but firm fuck-you: “I’m a dreamer/Don’t like it?/ I don’t need ya.” The song also features verses from Thig Natural of The Physics and Geologic of Blue Scholars. Give this and the other five cuts (all of which are produced by Boston-based duo Two Good Men) on the EP a listen. And then ask yourself whether you think Grynch has defined a way of being that reflects virtue of the kind usually only found in the sermons of a few select MCs, such as Talib Kweli and Cee-Lo?

Then head on over to the Nectar Lounge tonight for local MC Wizdom’s b-day bash, featuring performances by Large Professor of Main Source, J. Pinder, and, yes, Wizdom, with DJ Marc Sense serving deck duty. Grynch will probably be there, beer in hand, reminding all who will listen about the important things in life, like getting tanked on a Friday.
