Just When I Think I Have My Local Music History Down...

...I come across bits of knowledge that I can't believe I'm just now discovering. For example: Loretta Lynn got her big break at a Tacoma talent show?? How did I not know this? Idiot! [insert Napoleon Dynamite voice here]

It's especially ridiculous that I didn't know this because Lynn is one of those artists that never fails to leave me shaking my head with admiration. Confessional songs lamenting the struggles of domestic life are hardly unprecedented in country music, but there's something about the way she chooses the details in this song that make it particular poignant. As the titular refrain indicates, she's "pregnant again", and worried not only about the cost of milk and eggs, but the negative reaction of her husband. She's essentially saying it's an undeniably crappy time to be knocked up and the whole situation really blows. While not quite the full-blown feminist anthem that is her earlier song, "The Pill" (release in 1975), it's still refreshingly frank for a country song recorded almost 30 years ago:
