Last Night: The Knitters at the Tractor Tavern

The Knitters, "Poor Little Critter On The Road"
The beautiful thing about The Knitters (and all the lovely cowpunk bands who would form in their wake) is that they combine two of my favorite things in the world: the soul of country music and the off-key, defiant punk rock delivery that I grew to love in my friends' dirty basements and the Reno VFW Hall. Plus, after playing together for more than twenty years, the whole band works just as well as you'd expect them to. Exene and John Doe have their harmonies pretty much down pat. And yeah, Exene may not hit every note dead on, but that's what makes The Knitters. She's not Emmylou Harris, she's a punk singing country songs, and she belts 'em out with at least as much feeling as any Nashville star and a sassy attitude befitting punk rock royalty like herself.
Openers Dead Rock West
I think the standout song of the evening for me, though, was "Long Chain On," which is one of those haunting, almost Gothic country ballads that stick to your ribs, especially in the hands of John Doe, who's got an incredibly expressive face. They finished out with a raucous rendition of "Born To Be Wild," a fitting end for a show as well as an album (it's the final track on The Modern Sounds Of The Knitters). It was a great time. And I would encourage anyone who didn't come last night not to miss tonight's set. Thing is, I just read this Washington Post review from May of '07 that describes a set list very similar to last night's. Then again, the band's only got two albums to draw from. Here's hoping what Goldberg wrote in his preview of this show is true-- that there's a new album in the works. The band's set list depends on it.

Sara,
I don't know when you arrived but Dead Rock West played an awesome set starting at 8 pm and lasting until after 9 pm.
The Knitters started their set with Dave and John doing two songs and then with much fanfare, introducing "the rest of the Knitters!!"
They did the exact same thing to start the show the next night and apparently knew about your review because Dead Rock West mentioned it as they opened their show and John Doe even commented on it as well.
The show on Tuesday opened with John Doe's niece accompanied by a very talented guitarist, singing about 8 songs. She has an excellent voice and they live and play in the Portland area as Layla and John.
Then Dead Rock did a tighter, shorter set than on Monday and then the Knitters.
Both shows were packed and sounded great. Heads up for 8pm Feb 12th, Dave Alvin will be back at the Tractor, as a duo with another guitarist, to open for Martha Scanlon. Get your tix now, they will sell out....
Pay attention to the start times of the shows.. I believe the Tractor is starting most weekday shows at 8 pm to keep the noise level down due to the new senior housing complex up and across the street.....Did you notice the back wall has been covered with sound absorbing cloth material? Yep.
Tractor is trying to be a good citizen so that Mr Nickels and the sound police don't shut them down....

That's too bad-- I saw that 8 p.m. was named on the website, but in the past, that's always been the DOOR time. The change must've been pretty recent. I checked the website that day and saw that the time was 8 p.m. I showed up just a little bit after 9, and so I must have just missed the band. My humblest apologies. Seriously. The Knitters were great, though. Hopefully I can see the Dead Rock West next time they come around.
