Sharam's Wild West
On his debut solo disc, Get Wild (released via Ultra Records April 7), Sharam of duo Deep Dish makes the atoms of electronica collide with those of hip-hop to create, if not a boundary-breaking, then at least a boundary-shaking collection of songs. And none are more effective than "She Came Along," which features Cleveland MC Kid Cudi, a current favorite of mine. (His flow is refreshingly free of malice and hyperbole, as evidenced with his breezy turn on the Sharam joint.) The eminently playable tune opens with a death rattle that expands into a haunting tonal hum that evolves, finally, into a simple drum punch that keeps time with an equally simple bass loop reminiscent of a cowboy campfire sing-a-long. I'm not reaching here--I swear.
Consider: The album cover (featured below) and the fact that Sharam is playing what a press release describes as a "spaghetti Western-themed short film, which he wrote and directed" on his tour. Sadly, the closest Sharam will come to Seattle is Vancouver on May 1. (House heads pining for a major act with a hip-hop sensibility will have to wait for The Prodigy on May 30 at WaMu Theater). You can see--and hear--the Wild West references on the Kid Cudi cut here:
