Sasquatch '09: The Walkmen and Fences
The Walkmen took over the mainstage after Street Sweeper's high energy set, so they clearly had two options: to try to keep it up or send out a even calm. Fortunately for me, they chose the latter.I couldn't imagine a nostalgic blend of Coldplay, Bono, and maybe even Elton John trying to tear the grass off the lawn. Vocals were adaptive and stylized, and seriously what you want to hear from this band.
Seattle-based Fences started the show a little late due to technical difficulties, but there is much to be said about perseverance. After a few songs I was reminded of those musicians you pass on the street singing their way from one meal to another. Not necessarily homeless, but surely a struggling artist. Their lyrics are great because they have life experience behind them, but whether they really make it depends on if we'd rather walk by and toss them a dime or stick around to pay for another.
