Karriem Riggins at the Triple Door Tonight

Calling Karriem Riggins a triple threat automatically feels a touch cliché. The Detroit-born drummer truly is considered a young lion within the jazz world, a coveted hip-hop producer within neo-soul cliques, and a skilled part-time rapper, so possibly calling him multi-talented would be better. But no matter what you call him, watching him perform live is definitely something I'd recommend if you're a fan of quality jazz and hip-hop. Especially if you like the way the two intersect.

The 33-year-old first made a name for himself as a jazz drummer -- he bolted to New York at 19 to join the Ray Brown Trio but immediately started getting courted to sit in with artists like Roy Hargrove, Herbie Hancock, Oscar Peterson and Hank Jones before he was old enough to buy his own beer. But his hip-hop roots (Riggins grew up making music with J Dilla) still lingered and artists within that genre like Madlib, Kanye West, Common, and Erykah Badu started tapping him for projects as well.

He's currently employed as Diana Krall's drummer, but he's got his own quintet as well. That group, the Karriem Riggins Virtuoso Experience is in town tonight playing an all ages show at the Triple Door. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $24.
