Last night, a world music party broke out at Triple Door. DJ Kuhnex (left) and DJ Jigsy kicked off their new buzzed about Kwassa Kwassa party and took listeners on a voyage from the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean to West Africa, South Africa, and few places in between. The theme of the night is "world music" but it's realistically, African, Latin and Caribbean. By the time a friend and I rolled through at 11:30 last night, Jigsy, who is from The Gambia, was playing a little bit of hiplife, but mostly soukous and Nigerian ju ju (in the vein of King Sunny Ade). DJ Kuhnex, who is from Trinidad and Tobago, jumped on next and played some core reggae jams from Sister Nancy, Beres Hammond, and Mavado, etc. He even played Damian Marley's "Welcome to Jamrock" for 45 seconds ago, then wheeled it back and played the Ini Kamoze "World a Music" original where the tune came from. Then he started playing more Trini cuts with a calypso and soca vibe. Note to fan of dubplates: DJ Jigsy has some serious dubs. This night seems like it could be a good time and recapture some of the energy that the now defunct Mirabeau Room used to have.

As far as a kick-off night goes, it was successful. Kwassa Kwassa takes place every Monday night at the Musicquariam Lounge inside the Triple Door. And it's free.
