You Can Sandblast All You Want, But Drugs Will Still Fuck You Up
There's something fitting about the way this Kurt Cobain memorial situation is shaking out in Aberdeen. Since the monument creator, under pressure from the city, brought in a sandblaster to censor the word "fuck", fans have taken it upon themselves to fill in the blanks. Did the city really think that a sandblaster would keep the profanity at bay? I stopped in Sunday afternoon on my way back from the Oregon coast. The memorial is at one of the smallest parks you'll ever see. It's in a residential neighborhood, tucked up against a bridge, and has three parking spaces. Under the bridge fans have written tributes to Cobain (after the jump). I wasn't expecting to get emotional, but when I saw a guy simply writing "Thanks," I got a little choked up. Turns out he and his wife are from Brooklyn, and they're planning on moving out West. Aberdeen has this humble, peaceful monument to thank for us not bypassing their town the way most others are these days. I can't explain how to get to the monument. And I think it would be better for you to have to get out of your car at the 7-11 (yes, that's a hint) or a grocery store, meet a local, and ask for yourself. It adds to the experience. Read Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic's comments on the situation over here. Novoselic also writes a weekly column on The Daily Weekly.

Now that's love.
People can argue about if Kurt died in vain for years and years, but what's obvious is that while he lived, he touched more lives in six years than most people could in a lifetime.

Kurt would hate all of this. He'd have preferred no memorial and he hated the kind of person who felt his music was important. I feel sorry for the jerk who wrote "thanks" because Kurt would think he's a douche.

I think Kurt did want the recognition of making great music and making a statement that mattered to people. He was afraid of being labeled a sell out though. I think he did want fame before he became famous. It was only afterword that he found out that it didn't make things easier. He was a complicated individual. You can't just say he would have thought a guy was a douche for writing thanks. He only disliked the people that truly didn't understand him and put words in his mouth ... like me and you.

Said it before and will say it again. This guy gets crucified but the economic and social impact of this man and his bandmates is truly overwhelming.
As a conservative this is just hilarious. All my colleauges out there pissing and moaing. When all they do is draw attention to the very thing they seek to destroy. It can make a guy doubt his stance sometimes. But then I think of healthcare and it goes away!
Yes Virginia, even on our side there are dolts and idiots.

The memorial is not for Kurt.
It is for the people that want to remember the impact he had on them.

Who cares? The guy is dead and rotting. If there's a hell, he's roasting. He can't read your sentiments here, admire the comments on the memorial, or hear you're prayers.
