Bumbershoot Review: Janelle Monae's Phlegm Funk Experience
Who: Janelle Monae![]()
Jonathan Cunningham
Where: Fisher Green Stage
When: Monday, Sept. 7, 5:45 p.m.
Among her many many talents, Janelle Monae knows how to moonwalk. Not only can she moonwalk, she also makes paintings on stage while she sings. Earlier today, the highly buzzed about Monae left audience members looking astounded on numerous occasions and put on one of the most visually stimulating performances of the weekend. Yes, she sings like a trained mezzo-soprano, dances like a futuristic ballerina and captivates an audience unlike anybody I've seen in recent years. But while watching Monae pull out a blank canvas, grab a paint brush, and make live art on stage just as casually as a butterfly drifting through the air without note missing a note of the song she was singing, it was amazingly clear that her creativity knows no limits. She's a performance artist in every sense of the phrase and really does act like a futuristic R&B singer from outer space.
On a weird side note, it was interesting to see her hawking up loogies and spitting on stage so often...but when you're that talented, you can do whatever the hell you want and people will still love you.
