Who: Katy Perry
Where: Samsung Mobile Mainstage
When: Saturday, Sept. 5, 1:45 p.m.

Why Katy Perry was chosen out of 120 musical acts to kick off the festival on the mainstage is a mystery. But the Zooey Deschanel lookalike drew a huge crowd of teens eager to sing along to Top 40 hits like "I Kissed a Girl" and "Waking Up in Vegas." Donning a tiny '50s style swimsuit, she pranced, posed, and pouted her way through her debut album One of the Boys, occasionally pausing to giggle and say things like, "My boob almost fell out!" Perry is undeniably attractive, as are her hook-crammed songs. But a singer that turns to a soprano saxophonist onstage to hit the high notes for her shouldn't be citing Queen as her biggest musical influence. And she most certainly shouldn't be covering "Don't Stop Me Now" in front of thousands. Better to save it for a drunken night of karaoke.
