Perhaps more than any other musical genre, the perception that a metal band's earlier material is more vital than its later endeavors is both a jaded reflex and an unfortunate truism. I doubt anyone can convince me that Black Sabbath's 1995 release, Forbidden, exceeds 1970's Paranoid in terms of enduring quality.

This is particularly true in the case of Def Leppard. Before dropping abysmal-sounding--if multi-platinum-yielding--turds like "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and "Love Bites" on their highly receptive, white pump-wearing audience, Def Leppard made a handful of solid records that still sound impressive to this day. Their 1981 sophomore effort, High 'n' Dry, holds up the best, with its blessed absence of cavity-inducing synths and surplus of taut riffs still placing it in my regular rotation. Vintage video for title track is after the jump...

King Diamond says:

This is a little scary! Please don't play Def Leppard on the metal show or on KEXP period. How about some real metal on the list like Carcass, Celtic Frost, At the Gates, Megadeth, Venom, or Mercyful Fate for example. Those are true influencial metal bands. High and Dry isn't heavy at all? Accept's "Balls to the Wall" would've been a better choice, if that's direction its going.

Yo, KD--thanks for weighing in. Both co-host Tanner Ellison and myself have broad and deep tastes. I couldn't agree with you more about each and every band you mention (though I definitely prefer Mercyful Fate over King Diamond solo :-). I guarantee you'll hear all of those artists eventually during S&D, and probably some of them on the debut night. I'm currently obsessing on which Megadeth to pick. Currently leaning towards "In My Darkest Hour", but we'll see...
