I've Been Listening to Joy Division, Lou Reed, and Kelis

Lou Reed
Duff McKagan's column runs every Thursday on Reverb. He writes about what's circulating through his iPod every Monday.
Joy Division, "Atmosphere" (Permanent): This song and this record as a whole always has held a spooky -- while beautiful -- and very honest place with me. Atmosphere is a spiritual meditation.

Kelis, "Milkshake" (Tasty): If hip-hop/urban music has a punk-rock anthem, then it would most certainly be "Milkshake". I have always really dug how sister Kelis rolls. This chick is a bad-ass!

Lou Reed, "I'm Waiting For My Man" (American Poet): I really was a late-comer to the stylings of Lou Reed and even the Velvet Underground for that matter. This Lou Reed track has lately become one of my favorite songs and will stand up to any other genre of music if you have your iPod on shuffle. That is always the test of a good and relevant track to me.

OH MY GOD "MILKSHAKE"! That song was so popular for the longest time at my school.... I also used to like Joy Division a lot when I was REALLY into U2. Lou Reed has some good stuff too, my favorite would have to be "Walk On The Wild Side", what a classic song.

This week I've been listening to "Lola" by The Kinks and "If I Were A Boy" by Beyoncé. The girl can really sing, is a great performer, arranges her own music and stage shows, and is cool to her fans. That's what truly makes a great artist!

I listened a LOT to Joy Division this summer, really really great band. Reminds me I've to listen to them agiain, it's been too long.

Lou Reed is one of my all time faveorite musicians. I'm Waiting For My Man is such an amazing song.

This week I've been listening to Lou Reed (as always), especially "Caroline Says II" from "Berlin", which may be my favorite Lou Reed album. Except from Lou Reed, I've been listening a lot to "Innuendo" by Queen and Freddie Mercury's solo work. There comes a time in November, when you as a big Queen fan, feel you gotta listen to the guys even more than normally.

"Milkshake" by Kelis goes alongside "My Humps" by the Black Eyed Peas and anything by the Pussycat Dolls (except for maybe their cover of the Slumdog Millionaire song) as songs I really try to forget ever existed. lol That chorus is one of the irritating things that everyone in college was endlessly singing (not the rest of the song, just that), and it made me really resent its existence.

The Joy Division song is awesome though. "Dead Souls" has always been my favourite of theirs (and not only because of the awesome Nine Inch Nails cover).

Did I mention Puscifer's new EP last week? I don't remember... if not, I've been listening to that a lot. For those of you who don't know, Puscifer is the catch-all name that Maynard James Keenan releases music as when it won't fit into either Tool or A Perfect Circle. Two songs in particular leap to mind - "The Mission", featuring the vocal talents of the lovely Milla Jovovich) and the hauntingly beautiful "The Humbling River", which I believe is Maynard's best vocal performance since A Perfect Circle's "3 Libras".

And "One More Stitch" from Green River's "Rehab Doll EP" has just finished playing just now. (If you're into the Seattle music scene, these guys are a must).

I actually spent today listening to Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen, and Jeff Buckley whilst shelving books at the Library (before we opened to the public). There was an embarrassing moment when my supervisor caught me shaking my booty to a Prince song...gotta love that shuffle option ;).

Thanks Duff *rolls eyes*; "Milkshake" is stuck in my head now, including visions of the very subtle video that goes along with it!
"I can't get you outta of my head"; talking about songs that keeps buzzing in your head for some reason.

But what I'm actually listening to at the moment:

De Staat - Wait for Evolution; Dutch band with an energetic live-performance. It's rock music but meanders through all kinds of styles.

Triggerfinger - What grabs ya?
They're from Belgium and play raw, bluesy, grinding, teeth-gritting rock. Live they are even better.

The new album of Pearl Jam - Backspacer. "Just Breathe" is such an endearing song, the whole album is great.

Wolfmother; I remember they totally blew me away at the Lowlandsfestival in 2006. The new album is awesome and can't wait to see them perform live again

Grace Jones - The Hurricane; nice laid-back music from a wicked uberstylish lady.

Kasabian - I just discovered this British band, they're awesome!!!

Well...that's about it for now.

Take care!

I was so depressed over Thanksgiving I listened to the Velvet Underground's first 3 albums all the way through because the music fit the mood. Thanks, Lou.
