The Worst Song About Seattle of the Decade Goes to . . .
In line with end of the year/decade lists, I would argue that Owl City has created the worst song inspired by Seattle in the 21st century, "Hello Seattle." That opening high-pitched fizz, clunky references to our environment, and his grossly overprocessed vocals make me want to die. More fundamentally, Owl City bites Ben Gibbard's style so hard, contorting Gibbard's earnest lightness into insubstantial saccharine bullshit. While this fangirl's video dedicated to the song is very sweet, it's as uninformed as the musical inspiration is pathetic. Check out the "manta ray" at around :40.

Wow, OK, you were not kidding.
Certainly not any worse than Ben Gibbard himself though. There does however seem to be a market for monotone electronic gurgling--I hear this band on Radio Disney all the time.

Thank god I'm not the only one who doesn't like Owl City. It seemed as though everyone was falling for this band and, after selling out a show at Neumos, I decided to give them a listen. I was vastly disappointed; and this disappoints me even further.

How ironic: Everybody knows Ben Gibbard's style is "insubstantial saccharine bullshit".

If that's a Manta Ray at :40, then Owl City's claims that he never listened to Postal Service until recently are true.

ok it pains me that i even listened to this song once more, but you know on :37 or so where the girl writes "your house"? i think he's saying "your mouth." which is like really surprisingly and strangely and unnecessarily dirty, to me. of course, misinterpreted by the devotee. ok anyway.

A bit vicious if you ask me. And I doubt you really want to know, but she addresses her mistake about the manta ray on the page. As for the lyrics. The song playing is the original version and the lyrics she writes are the original lyrics. The band ended up changing the lyrics to mouth later. Either way, the electronica style is definitely not for everyone. But I think you should be attacking the song, rather than this girl, who obviously had nothing to do with its production.

Hmm, "worst song inspired by Seattle in the 21st century". Owl city isnt bad, if you think hes bad then you havent heard bad before. Hes not good either. Its not ripping someone elses style off if your music sounds similar. Im not defending owl city, I think you either need to grow up or think a little harder about what your talking about. Unfortunatly your opinion is your own. Its just annoying to me that people can even think that because two artists sound similar that they one of them copied the other.

I dont know what your talking about. Hello Seattle was a huge success for Adam and it is lyrically all good stuff about seattle! There's nothing offensive about or perverse (unless you look at it with a perverse mind). When he wrote this song in 2007, he had never been to either the east or the west coast, so obviously he wont be the most 'accurate' in his descriptions of Seattle. The ocean was like a dream to him, so this is him sing of what seattle is in his mind. I have been a fan since his first album with this song in it in 2007. His skill is unquestionable. He was paying Seattle a big complement in writing that song so show a little more respect buddy,
