Duff McKagan, left, writes a column for Reverb every Thursday. He writes about what music is circulating through his space every Monday.

Last Sunday, I was more than honored to be asked to take part in a show here in Seattle that benefited Haiti relief efforts--honored because of the sheer talent of the other performers that I would be playing a bunch of different songs with.

Where do I start? When Debra Heesh, Jeff Rouse, Mike, and his wife Ashley McCready first came up with the idea of doing a Hootenanny for Haiti, it was going to be loosely based on some acoustic jams that some of us had done together over the last year or so. On top of this, Deb organized a Patsy Cline tribute show at Columbia City Theater last year and enrolled the help of Kim Virant, Star Anna, and Kristen Ward to be Patsy for the occasion. Gary Westlake, brothers Rick and Chris Friel, Ty Bailey (my daughters' piano teacher!!), and Jeff Rouse were the band that night.

I have for the most part been out of town except for two of the hootenanny rehearsals, but I was kept in the loop as the talent pool started to grow outward from this core group. Matt Cameron came in for the cause. Star Anna's band from Ellensburg, too. Stone Gossard and then his old band Brad (Shawn Smith is the most mysterious and powerful male singer out of Seattle . . . period). Tim DeJulio, a local ringer guitar player, came in too. And last but certainly not least, Kim Warnick came out of retirement to sing Belinda Carlisle's "Heaven Is a Place on Earth" and fucking killed it!

My new good buddy Mark Pickerel really surprised me with how good a singer he is. I hope people in Seattle realize just how blessed we are with the talent of the musician pool here . . . and the ease of these musicians playing together and appreciating each other. This just does not happen anywhere else.

I had never in all these years played with Matt Cameron or Stone or Shawn Smith. We have all been friends over the years, but more so because we have kids and we do the odd kid birthday together. I told Matt before the show that if I had any regrets at all in my life, it was that I was not more "present" when GN'R toured with Soundgarden back in the early '90s. I was just too fucked up. He told me a great story about when GN'R came to Seattle in 1985 to open for the Fastbacks at the Gorilla Gardens and afterward showed up at the Central Tavern where Soundgarden was playing one of their first-ever shows. Apparently we bum-rushed the stage and asked if we could play on their gear. They wisely said no. I vaguely remember this . . . but only vaguely.

Star Anna is someone who I've heard a lot, about but didn't have the chance to see until our rehearsal the night before the show. She is the real deal. There is a pain in her voice that comes from somewhere deep, a place I dare not ask where it comes from. She will be a talent that we can all say that "We saw her when . . . ". Guaranteed.

Two of my highlights were being able to play Mad Season's "River of Deceit" and Mother Love Bone's "Crown of Thorns." I was absolutely proud to be onstage with Matt, Mike, Stone, and Sean for these. I felt like maybe my life and musical career had come full circle and finally rested somewhere back home, here in Seattle, a place that I love.

I was talking to Mike the other morning and we were reminiscing a bit. We have known each other since we were in our teens. I was playing the "what if" game. What if I had stayed in Seattle during the '80s? Would I have been in Soundgarden, or maybe Mother Love Bone? Maybe. We decided to rest easy in the fact that we all took our own and distinct paths and had somehow come out OK and somewhat successful. For guys like Mike and I, to be here and vertical and breathing at all is a bonus. Some might say a miracle. These extra innings that I call my existence right now are fucking beautiful.

This one really makes me happy for a bunch of reasons.

Firstly that you really DO appreciate our very special music world in Seattle. I can only suspect that this is a unique place, simply due to the musicians I know here. Everyone is giving, kind, supportive, grateful and totally "there" for each other.

And, it ain't just the "up n comers" either. It's these jewels in Seattle's musical crown - people who could be total stuck up bitches if they wanted to, simply cuz they've "made it". I have only had positive experiences with each and every one of them - including lots of the talented folks who were on stage on Sunday night.

Thank you for loving Seattle and our area as much as you do.

Made me happy to read that Ty is your daughter's piano teacher! That guy... well, there aren't enough words to express what a talented sweetheart he is!

Debra is a "force" for good in this town. We are so lucky to have her here! And, I love love love all the girls she has gathered for Patsy Cline, and to see them on stage again Sunday, well, that was terrific. Yay, Debra!

So glad the show was a success, a sold out crowd, and a simply gorgeous, intimate sing along time. It was FUN, and ought to be done again! Felt like we were with about 1,200 of your friends, invited to your rec room for a party. Everyone was friendly, happy and I didn't see anyone misbehaving.

I was proud to be there with my hubby and my friends. Thank you for inviting us.

Maybe you could have been in Soundgarden or Mother Love Bone. But most people would be happy with being in Guns N' Roses. ;-)

I've always been extremely envious of the quality of musicians in Seattle. A good portion of my music collection are from the Seattle area, Nirvana and Pearl Jam, to the lesser known groups like Green River (and Ten Minute Warning for that matter). There's obviously something in the water or something there, because the amount of quality music from the area far surpasses any other area that I know of.
Some might say that LA is a contender for that... but... well I'll just say that GN'R were very much in the minority there.

Also, I know how you feel about playing in the UK, because people are more likely to go to a gig here without having the record on the radio or anything. My theory for this is that's because there's such a lack of strong music coming from this country nowadays - with the exception of bands like Muse, Stereophonics, Manic Street Preachers and Lostprophets - that we tend to be on the lookout for something decent more often. All of the local music in our area is just shameless copy's of whatever is in the charts at the moment, so it's the bands from mainland Europe and America that manage to hold our attention. That's my theory, at least.

Of the videos I've seen from the Hootenanny, it looks like one of those shows that I will wish I was able to see forever. Like you said, that sort of thing just isn't possible anywhere else. Jeff Rouse singing River Of Deceit was phenomenal in particular.

I was a blubbering mess. The music aint good if i'm not. I should be a music judge O meter. Duff rocked it on that last song he performed by himself. The last two songs actually gave me a chance to dry up those tears.Well then I cried on the way home, god dammnit...

My family says make sure I keep them posted, for next and up-coming shows of Duff and all his friends.

Thanks for making a full circle Mr.Duff.Luv you.

P.S. We are truly truly blessed in the Great NorthWest.

Great entry! It's weird. I'm not sure if it was this particular period in time or these two distinct geographical locations; it seems everyone knew each other and really WAS successful on some level.

I think I can grasp how you feel when you say, "This just does not happen anywhere else."

It does, but I know what mean and what you were conveying. It's great when you've been running in similar circles with the same bands, people, fans, friends - 'scene' and can get together and just have some laughs.

Sounds like it was a lot fun!

The "what if" game, we can't help it, we all do it! You probably would have been in MLB, Soundgarden of even Alice (imagine that???). But what counts, my dear Duff, is that NOW you are here vertical and breathing, alive and fuckin' kicking!!!
You know, I really love all the music you're invloved with (GnR taught me about RnR whan I was 10) but the best thing you've done is find recovery!
You should be an example. Are you a sponsor? I hope you find time to dedicate yourself to this cos I KNOW you can do a great job!

Hey Duff!

Oh God! I wish I could have been to that show!! What I saw on the Internet was so good! The ambiance just seemed so warm & relaxed. You guys truly had a good time, and were singing & playing with your heart and soul! I really like Anna Star and Kristen Ward, they have something special. Cool to discover new artists. And a big thank you to all of you guys who’ve organised that show for Haiti! They so need support there!

If Mike and you are still here today, it’s because you are meant to! I believe that we all have a particular mission to pursue on Earth. Sometimes we completely miss out the point of our calling, and sometimes our life's purpose has found us, but we can’t perceive it. Often, it takes severe events to “wake” us up so that we can finally recognise the true value of (our) existence, but at the same time it brings us enlightenment, wisdom, and a true sense or purpose! The happiness you have now, you truly deserve it!

Hey Duff great show at Club Red in AZ on the 1st. It was great to finally meet you and the show was super fun. It reminded me of the Neurotic Outsiders, with you and Steve up there. Come back soon, keep up the column, and I cant wait for your book.

A kid's birthday party with a buch of supergroup daddies must be the shit!!

Mike MacCready had a reckless youth too? I tought all of the PJ crew were just regular guys. When are any of the grunge voices going to write about their lives. I could only imagine Ed Vedder writing a book. Being such a prolific, inspired lyricist, reading about his life must be a ride. He's probably been asked to already. I'd call his book Off He Goes...
