Duff McKagan at Sunday's Hootenanny for Haiti at Showbox at the Market. McKagan's column runs every Thursday on Reverb. He writes about what music is circulating through his space every Monday. More Hoot photos after the jump.
I'm sitting here backstage with Mark Pickerel at the Hootenanny for Haiti benefit, Sunday night at the Showbox at the Market. This gig includes many great cover songs that I either haven't heard for a long time, or never before. Check it out:

"Even The Losers," Tom Petty: This song had a profound effect on Mark as a kid and he somehow seemed to feel Petty's pain even back then. For me, it is just simply a great song, timeless and passionate.

"Love Hurts," the Graham Parsons version: Star Anna and Mark have been looking for an excuse to sing a song together for a few years. Tonight was a truly great experience for me as a musician, to see others excel at what they do. If you haven't checked out Mark or Star, well it's never too late.

"Crown of Thorns," Mother Love Bone: Sean Smith and Stone played this song tonight...KILLER! Sean Smith is fucking a God-like singer and should be worshiped!

Phenomenal show.

I don't think anyone on-stage last night will mind my pointing out Star Anna led the way, taking the roof off the joint with Love alone.

Ya'll radiated. Thanks so much for stepping up for a most worthy cause in such a memorable way.

Duff! I love, love, love Gram Parsons. His Nudie shirts, the tragedy and humour in his songs, that flowery (hummingbird Gibson?) guitar. I love his influence on Keith Richards, The Rolling Stones, and music in the late 60's early 70's.

From what I've heard the Hootenanny for Haiti was a big success, that's great!
I haven't even heard 'Crown Of Thorns' before, I think. Will go listen to it now.

I've been listening a lot to Queen's album 'Jazz'. happy albums that make you wanna dance!'Fat Bottomed Girls' is one of those classy songs, which starts off like only Queen could do it and you just need to sing along!

Also I want to mention Slash's new song 'By The Sword' feat. Andrew Stockdale as it's out streaming now. It's brilliant, looking even more forward to the rest now. To those of you that have yet to listen to it, do it now ;)

P.S.
I really like how the programs had the lyrics to some of the songs, just like church!!, that was neat. I want to check out Mark&his praying hands. That band title is rad!!!

Seattle is truly blessed with that mystical talent, that draws nation and world attention , always has and I'm sure it always will.

"OH NO GRUNGE"It has never had to do with trend setting(that's the viewers choice if they want to copy cat their idols) ,in the Northwest they just fuckn like to show us how it's done.We care about putting out or in my case listing to quality music.

Seattle audience take them selves too seriously sometimes though. This guy's from Canada, but when Pa and I went and saw Leonard Cohen, the security busted us for singing along. We need to lighten up Seattle come on!! Dance a little, get a little cray Zay..........Spill a drink on sombody to start a fight:)

Duff,
Awesome show! Thanks to you and Mike, and ALL the great musicians for making it such a memorable evening. It was a nice mix of music, with a very comfortable feell, like hanging out and playing music with your friends. And of course a good cause, I can now say I have been to a hootenanny.

I thought to myself "Solid, here's a chance to help some folks and see my peers rock!". The setting couldn't be better, the Showbox theater where I saw many unreal shows and made many good friends that are now onstage. I would say that last nights performances were missing but one vital ingredient. Sweat. I was offered a rather tame and composed set of arrangements that lulled me to a land of a glazed mellow syrup. Yes, yes the parts were played well and the singers sang their songs to an operatic degree for sure. It's just I noticed my ass didn't shake and my toes didn't tap. Surrounded by a sea of Microsoft male pattern balding fellows and ex-barbies did nothing for me either. Where's the shake appeal?

Duff,

Great show! We at Zircon Azul were glad that we could be a part of making such an amazing night happen. I wasn't expecting to hear Mad Season or Brad.. or for that matter Shawn Smith singing Chloe Dancer!

Great gig Duff! I was kind of sad though that security told me I couldn't record video after I recorded your spagetti incident song. There were some legendary moments that may be lost in time, but at least I can say I was there.

My three favorite songs were by far "Crown of Thorns", "The Killing Moon" (from Echo and the bunnymen and "River of Deciet". I actually never thought I would hear any of those three live in my life (except for Killing Moon but I missed the tour last year).

I admit that Star Anna has a great voice, but I haven't heard her material so I don't know if she has good talent on writting songs too, I gotta check it out. She looked a little bored at the beginning though, did anybody else noticed that? haha.

Actually
I have to confess that on many occasions I have been attracted to micro-softees, I dont drink anymore but had I had a drink at the show, I would of just walked up to one of those balding guys, pull their cat eye glasses off and just start making out with one:)maybe along with "I could never take the place of your man"or somthing:P

hate to be the spell checker, Duff, but it's spelled Gram Parsons. Love the song though. Gram had one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. RIP. Also, a song that I love that he sings on is "Hot Burrito, No. 1," by the Flying Burrito Bros. I love the heartbreak in his voice.

Sweat factor? In the Northwest?

I've never known a place where so many who could be moving just to keep warm can stand/sit almost perfectly still through a set. (Even one where the performers don't need to musial the chairs each song.)

Warned friends who performed at Portland's bluesfest in 2007 not to take it personally if it wasn't exactly a Jazzfest kinda crowd. =)
