Jurado Tests His Falsetto and Busts Out the Piano in This Week's MySpace Song

Another week, another Damien Jurado song: Titled "Everyone A Star," his seventh weekly installment is a riskier track than his last six. He sings in a slightly strained falsetto--which, in true Jurado fashion, still manages to sound sad and heartbroken--backed primarily by his guitar. But every few bars, he'll strike a lone piano chord, creating this inescapable sense of solitude. When he sings the song's chorus ("Everyone a star/ Everyone a star") or the ending refrain ("Free is all we are/ Everyone a star"), you can tell he doesn't believe his lyrics' positive message. It sounds as if he's trying to convince himself of better possibilities.

Jurado plays the Birds on Wire Festival this weekend in Pullman.
