She & Him's album will be released on March 23, but you can stream the whole thing now at NPR.
This latest collaboration between M. Ward and Deschanel won't win over those who hated 2008's Volume 1; the songs feature the same bubbly, sunny pop with Deschanel's airy voice front and center. (Personally, I find her vocals refreshing--feminine but bold and always on key.) But M. Ward fans can rejoice: there's more of him here than the last record. The best songs--"In the Sun" and Don't Look Back"--are filled with M. Ward's Chuck Berry-styled guitars, and his voice adds more than just a passing harmony. He even takes the lead for a significant part of "Ridin' in My Car."
It's no pop masterpiece, but Volume 2 is lovely, charming, and worth a free listen.
