The latest album from the UK-based, twang-infused, garage rock siren was recorded in an abandoned Georgia church, and is her third with collaborator/one-man backing band Lawyer Dave. It's not surprising a former member of an iconic all-girl act like Thee Headcoatees wouldn't stray far from her garage rock-roots, but the difference now is that she's exuding a confidence that makes her flourishes of pastoral folk, dark-hearted country and sultry blues sound both natural and effortlessly bewitching. She covers a number of classic standards here, including noir-flecked renditions of "Blood in the Saddle" and "Jack O'Diamonds," but it's her own compositions that have the most strength, particularly opening track "Forget It."
Holly plays the Funhouse on Thursday, April 22.
