Mayor McGinn knows how to have the city start off Labor Day weekend right: Put some funk into it.
He just named September 4th Wheedle's Groove Day, declaring:
whereas Wheedle's Groove is a coming together of Seattle's finest funk and soul musicians... and represents an often overlooked jewel in the musical crown of the city, the vibrant and prolific soul and funk music made in the 1960's and 1970's in Seattle's Central District.
In case you haven't heard of this massive collective of Seattle's still sassy, still raunchy once-upon-a-time stars, they're playing Bumbershoot's Fisher Green Stage at 3:45 p.m on Friday, their own holiday. They've been back on stages quite a bit over the past year, including McGinn's super-hip inauguration concert alongside clips of the documentary Wheedle's Groove featured at SIFF.
Now that you have an official proclamation to put behind your funk, consider getting festive for the occasion. Blast some '60s soul vinyl all morning. Strut into Bumbershoot clad in some funked out garb. So many options! And so many great mental images of McGinn in funked out garb!
