Reverb Mixtape: Prep for Bumbershoot with Songs by BOAT, See Me River, People Eating People, and Fences
There's just 24 hours until Bumbershoot, and if you still haven't decided which acts to see, well, you're in luck. This mixtape includes songs by four stellar Seattle bands or musicians that I highly recommend checking out this weekend. Here's a rundown:
Fences plays 6:45 Sunday at the EMP Sky Church. Get ready to feel sad.
1. BOAT, "We've Been Friends Since 1989." I haven't always been on board with BOAT's perfectly messy pop, but I'm definitely a fan now. The tight guitars and catchy chorus on this song will be stuck in your head until October. 2 p.m., Monday, Sky Church.
2. See Me River, "Heroine." The opening track on the band's The One That Got A Wake EP, "Heroine" is rhythmic and emotional, combining gothic themes with country sweetness--just like the rest of See Me River's songs. 6:45 p.m., Sunday, Sky Church.
3. People Eating People, "All the Hospitals." Nouela Johnston is a latter-day Tori Amos or Fiona Apple, just without the melodrama. Best line from this song: "You've mistaken silence for supernatural death." 12:30 p.m., Monday, Sky Church.
4. Fences, "Girls With Accents." This song from Chris Mansfield's upcoming debut album is just one example of the singer-songwriter's ability to turn statements of self-loathing--"I'm fucking up/ I'm fucking up/ I'm fucking up everything"--into charming, guitar-backed melodies. 6:45 p.m., Sunday, Sky Church.
