Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds are playing an acoustic charity show at McCaw Hall on Dec. 6 and 7 to benefit Just Give.
Update: Bumbershoot says they'd love to host Dave Matthews in 2011.

Though thousands of Dave Matthews Band fans were heartbroken at the news that the band planned to take 2011 off, Matthews said this afternoon that he hopes the band does make a concert appearance somewhere next summer. Specifically, Matthews says he's been thinking about the Gorge, where the band has spent Labor Day Weekend for the last five years.

"For the last ten years, by this stage of this year, I would know what I was doing for at least six months of next year," Matthews told us in a phone interview from his home in Wallingford this afternoon. "I want to stop that from happening for a year. And then, if we decide, well there's this cool thing happening here, why don't we go play there. I really enjoy playing the Gorge. I haven't decided on it, but maybe we'll do something like that or a version of that."

One of Los Campesinos! Favorite Songs is Also One You've Probably Never Heard--Until Today

Categories: MP3s

Originally released as the B-side on a largely overlooked Romance is Boring 7" around the same time as the full-length of the same name, Los Campesinos!--the UK-based band still standing as one of the most rhythmically, lyrically, melodically and emotionally complex indie acts of the year--weren't happy that "nobody" bought or listened to "Too Many Flesh Suppers."

Duff McKagan Is Taking Your Questions

Reverb columnist Duff McKagan has been around the block a few times. He's played in a few bands (Loaded, Guns N' Roses, Velvet Revolver) and studied business at Seattle U; he's a voracious reader, a bassist, a married father of two, and he's here to help.

The New Cave Singers Song, "Swim Club," Sounds Comfortingly Familiar

Categories: Local Musicians

CaveSingers.jpg
A few months ago, the Cave Singers announced that they'd be releasing their third album, No Witch, on Jagjaguwar Records. No Witch comes out on February 22, and since the band's changed labels (2007's Invitation Songs and 2009's Welcome Joy were both Matador releases), fans have probably been wondering if a change in sound will follow as well.

This morning Stereogum premiered the first single from No Witch; the song is called "Swim Club" and should put longtime Cave Singers fans' minds at ease -- "Swim Club" is the same old comforting Cave Singers sound. Some things just don't need to change.

For Would-Be Rockers, the Only Music School You Need Is Tuition-Free

John Roderick is the singer and songwriter responsible for Seattle's The Long Winters. His column appears on Reverb every Tuesday.
There are times when the best advice I can give an aspiring musician is to drop out of school immediately. I loved college myself, and I highly recommend it as a mind-broadening experience and an opportunity to squander your parents' money, but I can think of nothing less helpful to pursuing a career in music.

Fortune favors the bold, in rock music more than in any pursuit besides jazz dance and the Special Forces, and artistic inspiration is not something to take for granted or lump in with other more prosaic life goals. If you're writing songs and want to play your music for people and make records, it's not like applying for a job at a law firm--no experience is necessary. The music and technical programs offered by universities and art schools are great places to learn jazz chops, study orchestral music, or learn technical skills to work in broadcasting and television, but to be a rock singer, producer, manager, or booking agent, you need to get down on the street and start living it.

Speaking of Sub Pop, the Label Has Signed Mister Heavenly, Featuring Members of Modest Mouse, Islands, and Man Man

The new band features Nicholas Thorburn aka Nick Diamonds of the band Islands and Unicorns, Joe Plummer of Modest Mouse, and Man Man's Honus Honus. Sub Pop says the band's full-length debut is expected next year (no word yet on a key chain).

If you're really hungry for a taste you can catch Mister Heavenly at the Moore tomorrow night opening for Passion Pit, or stalk them on Facebook. Yes, we'll update with audio clips when they come around.

If Only Sub Pop Had As Much Faith In Beer Cozies As They Do In eMusic

Sub Pop has sold more than 129,000 digital copies of Fleet Foxes' 2008 debut LP, but not a single Fleet Foxes key chain.
"I'm not an innovation freak on the delivery side," Sub Pop chief Jonathan Poneman told me recently via email. "Content remains my principle interest."

The problems afflicting the music business haven't been about the content, they've been about delivery. And for over a decade, a cottage industry of startups and ideas--some good ones coming out of the Sub Pop offices--have emerged in an attempt to adequately monetize content through a form of delivery that's better than free and is not wrapped in cellophane.

iTunes and Seattle's Amazon.com have been selling mp3s to customers convinced that they own mp3s in the same way they own that box of Fleetwood Mac and Jim Croce LPs in the basement. Seattle's Rhapsody and its horde of competitors in the music streaming subscription business lease music to customers who care more about having unlimited access to millions of songs than owning a few of them. And for folks somewhere in the middle--still wedded to the idea of ownership but willing to pay a monthly fee for music at a discount--there has been eMusic.

Four Really Depressing Christmas Songs: Remember, It Could Be Worse

Categories: Lissssssssts

Tom Waits - "Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis"

For those of you who don't always anticipate the holiday season with a whole lot of enthusiasm, remember: it could be worse. You could be pregnant. In prison. With lawyers to pay. Tom Waits' original version of this song is chilling, but I've always thought Neko Case's vocals bring the destitution home in a way that Waits' gravelly Oscar-the-Grouch growl just can't (song posted after the jump):

New Visuals from Blue Scholars, Ripynt, and Avatar Young Blaze Continue Seattle's Trend of Prime Hip-Hop Cinematography

Categories: Music Video

Shot by the phenomenal Zia Mohajerjasbi, responsible for all of those other Blue Scholars videos you love plus Jake One's "Home" and Mackelmore's "The Town," "Coffee and Snow 2" is not only another high mark for the Seattle duo but another perfect embodiment of the everyman rap that they've perfected. From sitting on the john reading cinema books to playing Starcraft 2, scarfing down arroz caldo to slipping on the sidewalk, Geo and Sabzi continue to tell your story better than you can. The emcee shed some light on the three-day backstory to the sequel to 2008's "Coffee and Snow" via the Blue Scholars Website, including the unscripted shoot, accidental leakage of a preview clip to "crafty tumblrfolk" and the seeming ease with which the cross-country collaboration went down. You can scoop the track and instrumental for $1 on their BandCamp page. And with all the recent freebies they've let fly, a buck is only fair--especially if they're using it to buy dinner for Zia in payment.

Hit the jump for the hilarity of Ripynt's cameo-rich "To The Top" from Griff J and Av's Jon Augustavo-shot video for "Wishing On A Dream" featuring Isabella Du Graf. And keep your eyes out for the forthcoming visuals for Mackelmore's "Irish Celebration" that were shot over the past week.

Wolf-Parade11.jpg
Montreal's Wolf Parade just spent the year touring in support of their third record, Expo 86 -- and if their July appearance at the Showbox was any indication, it was a killer ride. But after wrapping up the tour on November 26 in Toronto, is the beloved quartet calling it quits?

The answer is yes -- for now.
