Shaka Brah! Eddie Vedder's Releasing a Ukulele Solo Album Called Uke Songs

So Eddie Vedder has a solo album coming out around June, and apparently--this is what he's told audiences on his current Australian solo tour--it features him singing and playing the ukulele and is even titled Uke Songs. Grunge-tastic! It's not exactly new territory for Vedder--remember he did play the uke on "Soon Forget" on Binaural in 2000--but still a bit of a surprising track to take.

Apparently Vedder is close friends with Kelly Slater, who convinced him to record an album's worth of ukulele songs. Kelly Slater would convince someone to record an album's worth of ukulele songs.

Vedder's released the album's first single, called "Longing to Belong," and you know what? It's really pretty. It's simple, sparse, and quite moving, resembling the lovely, Grammy-nominated solo stuff he did for the Into the Wild soundtrack back in 2007. Only with a ukulele.

In other Vedder news, Billboard reported today that Pearl Jam--who turns 20 this year--is about to hit the studio next month to begin recording an album of new songs.
