In Honor of Modest Mouse Working With Big Boi, 7 Other Unlikely Indie/Hip Hop Mash-Ups

Categories: Lissssssssts

Been camped out in the Lab with Modest Mouse all week, workin on the new mouse LP, coolest cats ever. Long Live The Funkless than a minute ago via Echofon Favorite Retweet Reply

When you hear news like the above announcement, tweeted on Wednesday by Big Boi, that Outkast's resident pit bull breeder was in the studio with Issaquah OGs Modest Mouse, all you can do is hope for the best. (Although it should be noted that Isaac Brock has been rapping now for about 17 years [like Ratatat]; check the cadences on great old Modest Mouse tracks like "Summer," "Karma Payment Plan," "All Night Diner," or say, "Out of Gas"--dude is pretty much straight talking over beats [but is it even music?!]) Could the new album be called Turnt Up?! (Please, yes.) "Long live the funk"?! OK, guys. Fingers crossed.

But to keep it positive, why not let's look at a few other unlikely indie/hip-hop cross-pollinations of recent years--no Run DMC/Aerosmith--that have turned out pretty well (granted, these aren't all in-the-studio collaborations, but they at least might provide some inspiration/hope--or maybe it's just a good excuse to post a list of hip-hop acts sampling good indie-rock songs, let's see!):

More Details on Portugal. The Man's Forthcoming In the Mountain in the Cloud

Categories: News

PTM - In The Mountain In The Cloud - Cover Art.jpg
Yesterday I shared my conversation with Portugal. The Man frontman John Gourley about his band's newest album, In the Mountain in the Cloud, as well as my regret that none of the new songs were available in full for public listen. That's changed as of this morning--fans can now head to YouTube to listen to the album's first single, "Got This All (This Can't Be Living Now)" (or just click through the jump to listen to here). (Note: The first single is not, as I originally thought, "So American.")

PTM's label, Atlantic Records, also announced In the Mountain in the Cloud's official release date--July 19--and its psychedelic cover art, which we thinks looks amazing.

Apropos of Nothing: The 10 Craziest Hair Styles in Rock

Categories: Lissssssssts

Surfing the interwebs yesterday, I stumbled across this handy infographic by Pop Chart Lab* which reduces pop stars to their haircuts. Identifying Cat Stevens by his unruly mop is fun and all, but it got me thinking about some of the archetypal styles in rock and even their evolution. Did hair metal spawn emo, for instance? We may never know, but here are ten iconic styles preferred by musicians through the ages.

Style icon: Elvis

Gotta love the vintage Moz.

There's something delectable about the slicked-back, greasy look of a properly constructed pompadour.

Can Anyone Find Any Negative Local Press on Fleet Foxes?

Categories: I Heard This

(Editor's Note: The photo originally embedded in this post has been removed.)

As we reported yesterday, Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold pointed out via Twitter: "Both weeklies in Seattle have joke-y, belittling articles about us this week. Being a local press punching bag is one reason I moved. Happy?"

Seriously? I can't find any negative local press on Fleet Foxes. Even yesterday's satirical pieces in the Weekly and Stranger weren't really negative (though in music journalism, anything short of sanctimonious tends to get branded that way).

So can anyone find ANY negative local press on Fleet Foxes that might make Pecknold feel like a "local press punching bag" and may have chased him away to Portland?

I can't. But I did some looking. Consider the following:

Tacoma's Vicci Martinez Is Cee-Lo Green's Newest Protégée on NBC's The Voice

I must admit that I watched this week's debut of The Voice mainly to gawk at how tragic Christina Aguilera is looking these days. Girlfriend has let herself go; I'm also pretty convinced she was drunk during the show's taping. That being said, I actually really like this show and even found a reason to keep watching it after an amazing singer from my hometown auditioned and made it through to the next round. Tacoma's own Vicci Martinez wowed the judges with an awesome performance of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep"; maybe I'm biased, but I think it was the best audition on this week's episode. Martinez is a regular around Seattle's live-music circuit--she's sold out the Triple Door and is actually playing a show at Woodinville's Big Daddy's tomorrow night--but thanks to her killer audition, she's now going to receive one-on-one vocal coaching from Cee-Lo Green (who we also think is the most entertaining and lovable judge on the show).

Watch the Trailer for the Shabazz Palaces-Scored Documentary About Kenyan Glue-Huffing, Tough Bond

The release date for Shabazz Palaces' much-anticipated Sub Pop debut Black Up has been pushed back to June 28 (to be celebrated with a pair of record release shows at Neumos on June 30 and July 1), but in the meantime, you can check out the above trailer for Tough Bond, a forthcoming documentary by Village Beat due out this summer, about "kids sniffing glue to survive street life in Kenya's disappearing villages and exploding urban slums." The trailer features Shabazz Palaces' electrifying mbira riff "Blastit" from their self-titled EP, and if that track didn't already send shivers down your spine, see how it does set to the simultaneously vibrant and bleak images above.

13 Songs You Won't Hear at the Royal Wedding Reception . . . According to the Queen

Categories: Lissssssssts

Prince-William-Kate-Middleton1-267x400.jpg
With Prince William and Kate Middleton's imperial nuptials just around the corner, the royal family havs their hands full these days. Whole teams of wedding planners (like six stylists for Kate's hair alone) have been enlisted to ensure the day runs as seamlessly as possible. With a person for every job, often it's the old folks who get overlooked in the frenzy. So in the tradition of Breakfast at Sulimays, we thought Grandma could put in her two pence regarding some potential songs for the reception. Unsurprisingly, she hated all over our suggested playlist. Here's the official decree from the Queen:
