Randy Montana to Remind Seattle--or at Least Puyallup--That It's a Country-Music Hotbed Friday Night
Billy Montana has penned hits for the likes of Garth Brooks, Sara Evans, and Jo Dee Messina. It's safe to say that's helped pave the way for his son, Randy Montana (no relation to Hannah), who spent last year opening for Sugarland and is prepping for several summer dates as Taylor Swift's warm-up act. His current single, "1,000 Faces," is glossed up to the point where it's not really country anymore, and the attendant lyrics and video (below) are quite corny.
But there's more to Randy Montana than this here superficial snapshot, and what remains should be plenty to steer you toward the Puyallup Fairgrounds for Montana's set this Friday at 7, part of Puyallup's four-day Spring Fair (not to be confused with the month-long Puyallup Fair later in the year).
Montana's other new singles, "Assembly Line" and "Last Horse," are thoughtful ballads that take their time. They're aided by some fine female harmonies, most notably on "Last Horse," where Emmylou Harris gets the mount.
But it's YouTube's vault of live footage that really shows another side to Montana. Covers of Tom Petty's "Listen to Your Heart," Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Tuesday's Gone," Don Henley's "Boys of Summer," and the Allman Brothers' "Midnight Rider" reveal Randy to be quite the rocker. Put him and his band in the ring with an ace cover act like the Davanos, and they might fight to a draw.
Montana's show is included in the $9 admission to the Spring Fair, which includes a rodeo, monster trucks, a classic car show, and a ton of chow. Besides, Seattle, you love country music. It's OK to admit it.
