The Weeknd Starts Here

No secret, I am as enamored as anyone of ambient R&B act the Weeknd (previously here and here). So good news, today Pitchfork (via the Fader) debuts a batch of early tracks from the Toronto producer (government name Abel Tesfaye), along with the news that two more mixtapes, following the outstanding House of Balloons, are on the way from him this year.

The tracks here are a little more classically R&B and extroverted than Balloons--"Do It" sounds like a Justin Timberlake outtake, while "Birthday Suit" was originally a demo for Weeknd co-signer and countryman Drake. These are definitely early tracks, promising more than fulfilling, perhaps, and their very ordinariness does a little to deflate Balloons' shy, shadowy charms, but it's still interesting to see where the Weeknd began and how far the still-nascent project has already come.
