Summer Can Finally Begin: dj100proof's Backyard BBQ Vol. 5 Brings the Sunshine Funk
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Summer hasn't officially hit Seattle until two things happen. The first is that The Physics drop a record--Love Is a Business is due out Aug. 6, and you can get psyched on a handful of streaming teaser tracks via the group's bandcamp. 
The second, of course, is when dj100proof mixes his annual Backyard BBQ tape. Available for free from his new website, along with the last four installations, the 41-track Vol 5. is a must-have if you plan to spend anytime in a backyard, near a barbecue, or really just in a mind-state conducive to either.
Encased in 100% Proof product (all design and photos courtesy of the man himself), the record is truly listenable from beginning to end. And with a proper mix of soul, funk, hip-hop, R&B, dub, and local sounds ("Mario" by Malice and Mario Sweet and "These Moments" from The Physics), you'll be consistently entertained--not to mention educated, recognizing a sample here or an original version there. The tape sports some unfairly funky mixes of Marvin Gaye, Al Green and De La Soul, a stellar Proof edit of Digable Planets' "Flyin' High in the Brooklyn Sky," and Hi-Tek and Common's "The Sun God." Perhaps most representative and symbolic, though, is track five: Roy Ayers' "Everybody Loves the Sunshine." Just bees and things and flowers . . .
