Tell Me About That Song: Lee McKinney, Lead Guitarist of Metalcore Band Born of Osiris
A lot went into writing your favorite song--but how much do you really know about it? This week Lee McKinney, lead guitarist of Illinois progressive metalcore six-piece Born of Osiris, delves into religion, getting a new house and self-producing.
Born of Osiris
Song: "Recreate"
Album: The Discovery
Release Date: March 22
When it was written: The song was written and redone many times over the course of the year leading up to the release of The Discovery. I was learning a bunch about recording and production around that time, so I kept re-recording it for fun, but along the way the song got better and I tweaked it more and more each time.
Where it was written: Wheaton, Ill. In my bedroom studio!
Favorite line in the song: "With a new world in our hands, we will gain control." I like how it's impactful yet open ended enough to be applied however the listener may feel.
Which part was the hardest to come up with? I guess the solo section was. We want back and forth over a couple notes in it. I also went about playing it different ways.
If you could go back and change anything, what would it be? I'm actually very happy with the way it turned out--can't think of anything I'd change at the moment.
Odd fact about song: It was the very first song I wrote in our new house, right after we moved in.
What was your inspiration for writing the song? Writing music is my favorite thing to do, so the inspiration . . . I'm not so sure where it came from. I'd say progression was the inspiration. As far as some of the riffs and stuff, Karnivool and Guthrie Govan is what comes to mind for me at the time I was writing this.
What is the meaning behind the song? From what I gather it has a couple meanings. At face value the lyrics are about us moving into our house together and discovering what we are capable of. At the same time, it's also about discovering your beliefs, whether it's religion or anything, and moving forward even stronger than before.
Born of Osiris will be performing at Showbox Sodo on August 26.
