An Insider's Guide to Decibel Festival: Ill Cosby on AarabMuzik, Night Slugs, Machinedrum, and More

To the unschooled outside observer, the lineup of Decibel Festival--Seattle's premiere celebration of electronic music and art (9/28-10/2 at various venues)--might initially look like an endless parade of anonymous DJs, each more bald, pale, and bespectacled than the last, until you eventually arrive at Moby himself. But entertaining as that stereotype is, it simply hasn't been true of Decibel for years--nor does it begin to hint at the genuinely unstuffy, burning-down-the-house party vibe of the five-day fest at its nightly peaks. To help make sense of a schedule that would require a Multiplicity's worth of clones to experience in its entirety, Seattle Weekly has solicited picks from this year's local participants.

Today, local bass-music pusher and Car Crash Set record-label head Ill Cosby lays out his picks for the fest:

"AraabMUZIK [Beat Prodigies]--I've been a fan since his production work on Cam'ron's 'Get It In Ohio,' and his new album, Electronic Dream, is both poppy and incredibly hard-edged. Electronic Dream is one of the albums I listened to most this year."

"Night Slugs Showcase--Bok Bok, Girl Unit, and Kingdom are at the very top of the bass-music field. This is an incredible opportunity to see three of the world's best producers at the moment in one place."

"Machinedrum [Community Bass Session]--His latest album, Room(s), is one of the first albums to incorporate Chicago's juke-music scene into contemporary electronic music without sounding like a gimmick."

"dBridge--It'd be enough for the average producer with his history to rest on their laurels, but dBridge is part of a subsection of drum-'n'-bass artists that is taking the music into uncharted terrirtory. Dark, soulful, and without boundaries--I think this one will astound the lucky people who catch the set."

Ill Cosby plays Decibel Festival Saturday, 10/1 at Volunteer Park for Decibel in the Park/Frite Nite Showcase, with Eprom, Salva, Comma, and more. Full Decibel lineup and further info at http://www.dbfestival.com.
