My 12 Favorite Songs of 2011
Pardon my uncoordinated taste.
12. Austra, "Lose It"
For the glassy, fluting beats, a pulsing tempo, and Katie Stelmanis' uniquely aqueous vocals.
11. Neon Indian, "Polish Girl"
For Alan Palomo's transformative ability to turn robotic blips and bleeps into a glittering pop song.
10. Bon Iver, "Beth/Rest"
For Justin Vernon writing a tongue-in-cheek homage to Christopher Cross on the 80s synth-tastic soft rock original and then flipping it over and recreating it into this stunning piano version. The year's best slow jam.
9. Yuck, "Georgia"
For showcasing fuzz rock at its best--modest and muffled but also dashing and joyous, with some lovely boy/girl vocal harmonies. My favorite indie breakouts of the year.
8. Girls, "Honey Bunny"
For being one of many irrepressibly sunny hallmarks on Girls' superb Father, Son, Holy Ghost; for making bony bodies and dirty hair endearing traits.
