A lot went into writing your favorite song, but how much do you really know about it? This week Josh Benson, vocalist and bassist of Seattle six-piece Monsters Scare You!, delves into techno beats, past relationships and Peter Gabriel.

Song: "Shut Up, Our Song Is On!"
Album: Monsters Scare You!
Release Date: TBA

When it was written: It was written back in 2006, but was revamped in June 2011.

Where it was written: Our practice space is in Kent.

Favorite line in the song: The end of the song - "Just say this is the best night of our lives ... No Way, your hand is holding mine."

Which part was the hardest to come up with: The hardest part was finding a tempo to the verse. I didn't know if I wanted it to be an upbeat and fast rhythm or more separate guitar strumming and a slower sounding rhythm to create space. We decided the best way was upbeat and faster in order to fit into our overall sound.

If you could go back and change anything, what would it be: We would change the techno beat to synch up better with the song. The part comes at you out of nowhere, which we thought was cool from a chaotic sense, but in order to give the song cohesion it would may have been better to blend it a little more.

Odd fact about song: I actually made this song back in 2000 and I always thought it was a catchy song. So I brought it to the band and we re-worked it into a Monsters Scare You! song.

What was your inspiration for writing the song: The song goes back to a past relationship. "Say Anything," the movie, was her favorite movie and the song "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel was on the radio when I wrote the song, which formed the chorus. But at the end of chorus I wrote, "We replace these scars with broken hearts," due to hardened relationships. No one wants to see scars and tell stories of why they've received them. You would much rather hide them and heal from a broken heart.

When was your favorite time performing it live: Favorite time performing it was at Warped Tour 2011 at the Gorge. This was a very special time for me and the rest of the band.

What is the meaning behind the song?: The meaning behind the song was to emphasize the moment when you are in a relationship with someone; you always have your song. Whether it's from a wedding or movie or when you first kissed, couples always have their song. When listening to "Shut Up, Our Songs On!" I want it to be a tribute to remembering your first song and I wanted a title of the song to be humorous to a serious song because whenever someone hears their song they instinctively turn it up louder and say, "Hey! Our song!"
