After several years of traveling around the Midwest in pursuit of Barusk bands like The Long Winters and Death Cab for Cutie, Laura Musselman finally decided to cut to the chase and re-locate in 2006. "I took my camera every time I went to a show in Seattle," she says. "I took lots of horrible pictures." ![]()
Robin Pecknold, Fleet Foxes. The opening party for Laura Musselman's "Give Me a Moment," is at 8 p.m., Saturday at Solo Bar in Lower Queen Anne.
By the time we found her the following year at an in-store performance at Easy Street — where she was then employed — she'd just started getting serious and bought her first SLR. Our camera malfunctioned, and we tapped this enthusiastic, trigger-happy shooter on the shoulder. Might you be interested in lending a few pictures our direction?
It's been nearly three years and Musselman has not only avoided burnout, but her pictures — frequently as often as three and four nights a week — have only gotten sharper, and more original. She's chronicled the rise of local do-gooders Fleet Foxes, captured her heroes in Pearl Jam recently at KeyArena, and developed a crush on Elvis Perkins.
Go have a drink with her tomorrow night. And if you can't make it tomorrow, be sure to stop in and see her work by the end of the month.

Photo & Questions by Jenny Jimenez
Jenny Jimenez
Name: Shawn Kock
Found: Playing guitar for the Absolute Monarchs at a Halloween house party in Magnolia.
Favorite Albums/Bands: Let them Eat by the Monorchid, Night Club by the Yummy Fur, and Bad Music for Bad People by The Cramps
Albums currently listening to: The Spits, Buju Banton, Capleton
First show he attended: All local Sioux Falls, Idaho bands at a garage show in 1992
Last show he attended: Brothers of the Sonic Cloth last month at the Comet
What he listened to in high school: Lots of Minor Threat, Gorilla Biscuits, and Slayer
On what influenced him to become a musician: Listening to records with my dad, like Kiss, Black Sabbath, Queen... stuff like that. I wasn't good at sports. I started playing acoustic guitar at age 12 when I found a Hohner at a garage sale and borrowed the money to buy it from my mom. When I was 14, I babysat my little sister for an entire summer so I could get enough money for an electric guitar and amp. I eventually hocked it for a more metal guitar; a silver crackle Ibanez.
The Absolute Monarchs play the Wild Rose on November 28th.

Local photog and Seattle Weekly Flickr Pool contributor Alex Crick added this image he took of Elliott Smith when he played Moe in the mid-'90s with his band Heatmiser. Figure 8 is still my favorite Elliott Smith album. I know that puts me in the minority, but I'm a sucker for "Son of Sam," "Everything Means Nothing to Me" and all the rest. RIP, Mr. Smith.![]()

Like Michael Alan Goldberg pointed out in this week's issue, Jenny Jimenez — the brain behind the lens behind the Seattle People slideshows — is showing off a decade of music photography tonight at West Seattle's Skylark. She'll be joined by musical guests Damien Jurado and Amy Blaschke. The party starts at 6 p.m. The show, Show Me Your TIFFS, runs through December 14. Get their early and beg Jimenez to join Blaschke for some Night Canopy tunes.

This weekend was a filled with tons of great show options, leaving Neumos only about half-full for the circus Monotonix always brings to town. As expected, there was crowd-surfing, moshing, dancing in windows, throwing garbage cans around like beach balls, and all-around mayhem. There were almost as many photographers and videographers as there were fans. The mosh pit was a massive semi-circle crowded around the band who played in front of the stage, with people taking turns moshing up front, dancing in the back, crowd-surfing, or watching from the balcony with drinks.![]()
