What I Did Yesterday Afternoon (#Macklemore #Beef)

So I was supposed to have this out with the Weekly's own Nick Feldman, a little well-reasoned pro/con on the whole Macklemore issue, but then yesterday I got into a little Twitter scrap with my esteemed colleague (and friend) Jonathan Zwickel over at City Arts (which has a fine cover story about The Head and the Heart this issue), with him standing in for the pro-Mack/Head and the Heart/"sincerity" position. (Sorry, Nick, let's you and I throw down on the next one.) I'm juggling a few deadlines right now, so I don't have time to post it all here, but consider the following a sort of Greatest Twits collection of our conversation (more beef after the jump):

Twitterviewing Gabriel Teodros, Now!

Categories: twitterviews

hidmo01.jpg
As Sara mentions below, Gabriel Teodros and Khingz, who collectively come together to form the duo Abyssinian Creole, will be performing tonight at Chop Suey. Teodros will be journeying to Ethiopia in December as a member of the Arbaminch Collective, a group of performing and creative artists of Ethiopian descent who live in North America. While preparing to participate in that collective, he has also been working on his follow-up to 2007's Lovework, entitled Colored People's Time Machine.

I look forward to asking him more about his trip and the experiences he anticipates, as well as talking to him about his reflections on how the hip-hop community has evolved over the years since he released his last album. This will be the last weekly twitterview for the foreseeable future, so make sure to tune in, either on Twitter (@gabrielteodros & @swreverb) or in the live feed below.

As previously mentioned, Grayskul, Seattle's resident grim-hop duo, is headlining tonight at the Crocodile, and today I get the honor of tweeting with both of them. The break-out group from Seattle's famed Oldominion Crew, Grayskul performs in anticipation of their newest release, and I look forward to asking them each questions about what to expect from them moving forward. While technology may not be on our side, you'll be able to follow the conversation with me (@swreverb), JFK (@jfkakaninjaface) and Onry Ozzborne (@onozz717) in the handy live feed after the jump.

Twitterviewing PSMOOV of Fresh Espresso Today @ 1 p.m.

freshespresso.jpg
In a few, I'll be talking to P Smoov (Peter Robinson), rapper and producer who is 1/4th of Mad Rad and 1/2 of Fresh Espresso, who will be playing this Saturday's REVERB at the New York Fashion Academy. Their album Glamour got a lot of KEXP love and critical attention, reaching #1 on the local music charts with its slick, synth-heavy production, best shown on tracks like "Lazerbeams" and the finger-snappy "Girls and Fast Cars." I look forward to talking to Robinson about his contrasting artistic approaches to Mad Rad and Fresh Espresso, where he derives his lyrical inspiration from, where he thinks Fresh Espresso stands within Seattle's snooty coffee culture, and more.

Follow @freshespresso and of course @swreverb ; if you want to see a running log of the conversation, click below the jump.

Twitterviewing Macklemore @ 1 PM

-1.png
In a few minutes, I'll be chatting with local MC Macklemore, who will be performing on Monday afternoon at Bumbershoot's Fisher Green Stage. Since releasing his debut LP, Language of My World, in 2005, Macklemore has gone on to tour across the country, in Europe, and most recently at the Homeskillet Fest in Sitka, Alaska. He's also been keeping up a blog full of vintage store finds and choice Youtube gems at bengalyucky.com.

I look forward to asking Macklemore about what we can expect from his Bumbershoot performance, his favorite thrift stores in Seattle, and his new project VS. with Ryan Lewis among other things. You can follow the conversation by following him at @macklemore, or look below the jump to see the live feed. Get to it!

Twitterviewing State Of The Artist

Categories: twitterviews

sotaandmanager.jpg
Today, I'll be chatting with Parker Joe, TH and Hyphen8d of the rap group State of the Artist, who recently released a free EP, Shapeshifters, available for free download on their website. The group just recently reunited after Parker Joe returned from New York City, and they are playing a farewell-for-now show at an intimate loft in SoDo, the Lazerdome, on Saturday before they head down to Los Angeles for a month.

I look forward to asking them about how they came together as a group, what drives them as a crew to perform and compete in the realm of hip-hop music, and naturally their reflections on the "state of the artist" today. What's more, we'll be using our nifty live feed feature to talk to all three of the guys in the group; since it gets messy following our twitterviews even with one person, keep tabs on the live feed box located below the jump for the full conversation as it unfolds. We're making twitterviewing history here, people! Stay tuned at 1 PM, and feel free to join the conversation and suggest a question using the #swreverb hashtag. As always, follow @swreverb for all the updates.

Twitterviewing Marcus D

Categories: twitterviews

MD14-1.jpg
Today, I'm twitterviewing local producer Marcus D: at the age of 19, Marcus recently won the local round of the Red Bull Big Tune Beat Battle, a competition that pits beatmakers head-to-head for the audience to decide who's got the strongest, sauciest tunes. By all accounts, Marcus D blew away competition with thunderous bass lines, and will be flying to Atlanta to compete in the national contest in October. In addition, he's one half of the hip-hop duo Quarter After, and is a student at Seattle University where he's majoring in business and fine arts. He and I actually were in class together for two quarters for Audio Engineering, and while I spent weeks trying to figure out how to turn the MIDI keyboard on, Marcus presented nuanced, carefully composed songs each week for homework assignments that put the rest of us to shame.

You may already know the drill: follow us at @swreverb and Marcus at @marcusd206, and catch the conversation as it goes down, starting promptly at 1 PM. See you on the tweetosphere!

Twitterviewing THEESatisfaction Today @ 1 PM

Categories: twitterviews

Today, I'll be tweeting back and forth with the illustrious THEESatisfaction, the fly-ass duo who combine crunchy tech-hop, vintage vocals and a strong element of space for some seriously creative rap/jazz/funk. While you're waiting with bated breath for 1 PM to roll around, check out their most recent EP, Snow Motion, which you can stream on their Myspace and purchase at Hidmo.

I'll be chatting with them about the MTV show they've been shooting all week, their projected move to the Bay Area in about a month, and their detailed plans to take over the universe one song hook at a time. Follow @swreverb as well as @stasandcat; if you're twit-impaired, check out the running log of our conversation after the jump. And you can always hop into the thread by ending a tweet with the #TWV hashtag.

Twitterviews Are Back!

Brittney Bush Bollay
Did you miss them? Every Thursday at 1 PM, I get to chat with a local musician via our @swreverb Twitter account, with the belief that the limit of 140 character responses reveals something new and insightful. At the very least, they're entertaining to watch. In about a half hour, I'll be tweeting with Jason from Born Anchors, a three-piece Seattle rock group that will be featuring at the KEXP Under the Mural Concert Series/BBQ this Saturday. I look forward to asking him about the name of their most recent release, Sprezzatura, where he thinks the epicenter of emergent talent is in the city, and maybe something about food. Who can say? Join the conversation by following @bornanchors, and feel free to "twitterupt" by adding the #twv tag; by adding the hashmarked phrase, your voice will be included in the conversation. If you're twitter inept or a twitterhater, you can follow our conversation in the live feed after the jump. Here's a track off Spezzatura, "Old News," that will give you an idea of their upbeat, driving sound.
