The Wright Exhibition Space is hosting a talk this evening, in conjunction with their current exhibit, Century 21: Dealers Choice. This show features 49 Northwest artists selected by the members of the Seattle Art Dealers Association, and chosen by gallerists other than their own.

Speaking tonight are Jeff Atkin (PONCHO), Matthew Kangas (Art in America), and Beth Sellars (Suyama Space), in a panel discussion moderated by Greg Kucera on the topic of Northwest Art.

Does such a thing exist today? Is this a phrase that's perhaps historically loaded, but less relevant now? What does it mean to an artist to be from, working in, and/or showing in the Northwest?

To see a full list of participating artists (from emerging to senior artists) as well as the nominating SADA gallerists, read the full text of the press release after the jump.

Usually open only Thursday and Friday afternoons, for this show The Wright Exhibition Space is open Saturday. If you haven't made it to the gallery yet, tonight's a good chance to check out the exhibit and hear some of the thinking that might have been inspired by putting this exhibit together.

And perhaps ask the question, is this the first of a series of exhibits curated by SADA in the Wright Space? Could it be the Seattle Biennial people have been hoping for? Might it turn into that?

Look for the low, ivy-covered building on the north side of Dexter; the entrance is around back.

Wright Exhibition Space, 407 Dexter Avenue North, Seattle WA

The Seattle Art Dealers Association and the Wright Exhibition Space are delighted to announce Northwest Art: Perimeters and Parameters, a panel discussion held in conjunction with the current exhibition "Century 21: Dealers Choice." The event will be taking place on Wednesday, October 22, 6-8PM.

The exhibition, which opened September 12, features 49 Northwest artists chosen by the members of SADA to represent emerging, mid-career, and established artists that the members felt produced work of notable quality and relevance to our region at this particular point in time. The panel will include Jeff Atkin, PONCHO trustee and art collector; Matthew Kangas, Art in America contributor and author of numerous books and essays on Northwest art; and Beth Sellars, independent curator and director of the arts program for the Suyama Space in Belltown. The discussion will be moderated by Greg Kucera.

The panel will discuss the notion of "Northwest Art," what it has meant in the past and what it means today; asking whether it even makes sense to think about art from a regional perspective in an era characterized by interconnectedness, and increasing movement of people and ideas. Issues relating to the organizing of the exhibition, the selection process, the collaboration between SADA and the Wright Space will also be discussed.

This event is free and open to the public. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to mail@jamesharrisgallery.com.
