Internet Dating Don'ts

Over at the P-I, Diane Mapes has an entertaining piece on the mistakes people make in their singles ads on craigslist. Well, here's one you're apparently not allowed to make on eHarmony:

Did You Miss Dategirl on Maxim Radio?

Well, you're in luck, because here's an archived version of Ms. McGuire's appearance on that Sirius show:

More Bad News for Women

no_baby_web.jpg

Readers of a certain age may recall that infamous (and later discredited) fake statistic that women over 40 were more likely to be struck by lightning than get married. Leave it to the U.S. Census to dredge up new and depressing demographic information. Per the NYT:

"Twenty percent of women ages 40 to 44 have no children, double the level of 30 years ago, the report said; and women in that age bracket who do have children have fewer than ever — an average of 1.9 children, compared with the median of 3.1 children in 1976."

Says one sociologist in the story, “Clearly women have competing alternatives for the use of their time, with the labor market and employment being one and delayed marriage, which has been another trend." Oh, and women are also spending more time reading worrisome statistics on marriage and parenting. Because that's what the Internet is for.

We'll see what Dategirl has to say on the subject.

Stusser: Dateboy

Most of you already know and love our Dategirl, Judy McGuire. And many of you probably know and love longtime SW contributor, humorist, author, and board game inventor Michael Stusser, who penned this fantastic experiential piece on the trials and tribulations of limiting oneself to a diet of organic food last year. But now, Stusser and Dategirl have seemingly melded into one, as Stuss offers up his advice to Seattle bachelors who've been having trouble penetrating the bush (even though the author's now happily married, he racked up plenty of miles in this area during his first 40 years on earth, including frequent trips to the Pampas Room). Enjoy!

In this week's installment, she dispatches advice on how to sabotage a date to the point where you can virtually guarantee the unattractive suitor won't come calling again. Enjoy!

Girl Walks Into a Gay Bar

An attractive, heterosexual female colleague of mine, who shall remain nameless, went dancing with some friends at R-Place last night. Common wisdom dictates that she went dancing at R-Place to cut loose in a comfortable environment that would free her from the shackles of getting hit on by obnoxious straight guys. But try this one on for size: Said female colleague reports that she gets hit on at gay bars more than she gets hit on at straight bars, and that last night at R-Place was no different.

There are, we reasoned, two potential explanations for this: (1) the dudes that hit on her are bi, or (2) the fact that cute girls love to dance at gay clubs (i.e., part of the "common wisdom" above) has become such common knowledge that straight dudes are now infiltrating these establishments for the express purpose of pulling surprise attacks on pretty ladies who assume, based simply on the environs, that a given guy's gay, thus decreasing his odds of getting the brush after the first "hey, gorgeous." Since my nightlife these days is pretty much limited to my deck, my office, and the Tug Tavern, I'd love it if someone could offer some more seasoned insight here in the comments section.
