Monsoon Capitol Hill to Be Torn Down?
Last week, the Seattle magazine food blog, followed by the Leslie Kelly at the Seattle PI and Nancy Leson at the Times, reported that Monsoon, the 10-year-old Vietnamese restaurant on 19th Ave. E. in Capitol Hill, was opening a second location in Bellevue, in the space that housed the just-closed Porcella Urban Market. Owners Eric and Sophie Banh would be running both Monsoons at once. (Eric also owns two Baguette Box sandwich shops.)
Looks like there's more to the story.
Over at the newly expanded Capitol Hill Seattle blog (though the Gay Curmudgeon blog broke the story even earlier), Andrew Taylor recently posted notice of plans to demolish the building currently housing Monsoon and replace it with a four-story residential building with retail space on the ground floor. Weber & Thompson, whose porfolio includes Wallingford's Bagley Lofts and the Madison Tower, is listed as the developer.
I've got calls out to both the restaurant and the developer, but no return calls yet. I'll update this post when they get back to me. In the meantime, I've been hearing reports from a number of sources that Monsoon's weekend dim sum is out of this world.
