Macrina: Climb Into a Nice Comfy Waffle

Categories: Soak It Up

Where: Macrina Bakery & Cafe, 2408 First Ave., BELLTOWN, 206-448-4032, www.macrinabakery.com.

When: 11:30 Saturday morning, the recent maximum-snow weekend.

Brunch hours: Sat. & Sun., 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Level of hangover: Plus-one and I were dazed from the effects, the previous evening, of Jackie Brown and way too many Milanos.

The soak: This bakery's eating space is cozy: seven tables (plus the counter seats five). So the wait is long--for us, 35-40 minutes--and not so comfortable: you stand in the doorway trying to keep out of the way of people who come in to buy bread and leave. But as soon as we were seated, they brought an herb baguette with butter and jam (and later, a brioche) to ease the wait, and with the first bite we were pretty much persuaded it'd been worth it. My waffle, piled with brown-sugar-sauteed bananas, hazelnuts, and mocha whipped cream, was beyond luxurious, pegging the needle on the comfort-food meter. Plus-one's tender, tender flank steak with eggs and greens was equally sybaritic. (The menu changes each weekend, so check the Web site to see what's up.)

Hair of the dog: Macrina's divine raspberry mimosas are made with fresh puree; lava-lamp style, it gently sinks to the bottom of the flute, a lovely ruby red, so the drink gets fruitier and less alcoholic as you go. Mmmm!

Success of the soak: Sustained me for an afternoon of Christmas shopping in the slush, that's for sure.
