Frozen Custard Comes to Seattle
What suburbanites have been enjoying for two years in the sprawling area southeast of Tacoma, Capitol Hill hipsters are only now going to get a chance to sample. (So much for being cutting-edge.) Old School Frozen Custard, currently open in Bonney Lake, will be opening a second store at Pike and 13th this spring. Nathan Hedin, who co-owns the shop, discovered the frozen concoction while attending college in Pennsylvania, and decided to introduce it to the West Coast with the help of his in-laws. It's made with egg yolks to give it a silky texture, and served at a slightly warmer temperature than other ice creams. The result looks a bit like soft-serve, but is scooped. Hedin plans to stay true to custard convention, serving just vanilla and chocolate plus a flavor of the day. (Some of the more popular are lemon, cheesecake, and butter pecan.) Mix-ins include Oreos, Graham crackers, and fruit, as well as Nathan's Hot Dogs, which will help you justify skipping right to dessert.

The first and the best....thanks Old School! Keep doing what you do...You were the first and don't let anyone try and take that from you.... imitation is the biggest form of flattery. I travel 45 mins for your stuff and now I only have to travel about 10....can't wait!

Seriously... How did you guys miss Four Peaks?
Should this post be retitled:
Frozen Custard Comes to (Capital Hill, the only place that matters in) Seattle
@Mman: Can something be called "The First" if it's the first to do something that's widely popular in other parts of the country?

Old-timers will recall that there used to be a frozen custard stand-up counter in the basement of the Penny's store at 2nd and Pike. It cost ten or fifteen cents, served in a glass.
Another treat was five-cent ice cream sandwiches, served out of a freeze on the street outside of the Kress five-and-ten at 3rd and Pike.

I am glad to see people are as excited about this as I am. Mman has every right to be excited for whoever he wants to be. He clearly loves this stuff. Why are we ridiculing others? By reading the dates it appears Old School was the first of the existing custard places so it was the first Mman had around here.
No need to be bitter. This is ice cream we are talking about.

Finally! I moved from the midwest where custard was prevalent and was shocked there wasn't a place to get something so delicious. Now I can finally cure my craving that's been building for almost 2 years!

Since day one, Old School has been the absolute best frozen dessert I have ever had, no more Coldstone, or Baskin Robbins. This is the real deal!!! I've have Sheridan's, and Peaks, nothing close to Old School! They rock!!!!
