New Restaurant Openings, Farmerettes, and Other Food News

Once again, here are a few of the food stories that caught my attention:

First off, a few restaurant openings from other sources. Nancy Leson gets the dish on te Hudson Public House, Collins Pub's new location in Maple Leaf (the old Anita's Bistro spot). And on Seattle Magazine's Eat+Drink blog, Ali Scheff gets closer to finding the truth behind Tom Douglas's new restaurant, though he's keeping mum about exact details. Tom? Eric? I'm here for you should you want to drop me an email. You know I've always loved you more than she does.

Michelle Obama's Agenda Includes Healthy Eating by Rachel Swarns (NY Times): Even as Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack is being called a big ag toadie by liberals and now conservatives, too, the First Lady's taking up healthful eating as one of her causes.

Food Bank Gets Tons of Cornflakes (USA Today): Well, apparently you won't be picking up Michael Phelps commemorative cornflake boxes after that little bong incident. A food bank in San Francisco scores big.

NPR interviews Elaine Weiss (it's a six-minute segment) about her new book on the Women's Land Army of World War I. Much like Rosie the Riveter in WWII, the "farmerettes" played a critical role in sustaining the country while all the young men were dying in Europe; like the Rosies, when the fighting stopped the WLA was forgotten. A great piece of history recaptured.
