West Seattle Farmers Market Today

If all that winter produce that looked so delicious three months ago is starting to get a bit boring (aww, parsnips again?), rejoice! Spring is peeking its sweet little head around the corner with the arrival of some wild greens like watercress, stinging nettles, and miner's lettuce, which resembles spinach in taste and gets its name from the early Gold Rush miners who used to eat it to stave off scurvy. Be on the lookout for other spring goodies, like fiddlehead ferns, which will probably appear in a couple of weeks. What the heck are those? Well, I'm glad you asked. Fiddlehead ferns are the tip of the unfurling fern frond, picked while still curled and they're both savory and beautiful. They taste a bit like asparagus, and should be consumed immediately as they don't keep especially well. Such an unusual item is sure to impress on the dinner plate. Southwest Alaska Street and 44th Avenue Southwest (one block west of the Junction). Every Sunday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
