There's a New Cup--er--cakery in Town
Yesterday, Mike Hein took a break from plumber-wrangling to talk to me about Yellow Leaf Cupcake Company, the new bakery that he and Tony Portugal are opening in Belltown in a few weeks. If all goes well, they should be open around May 15.
The two, who say they've tasted cupcakes all over America, moved up here from LA last fall to settle down and open their cupcake business. Portugal's background is in baking and cooking, while Hein comes from sales and marketing. The model for their shop, Hein says, is Dots Cupcakes in Pasadena. "It's little, intimate, fun," he says.
"We're going to have 35 different cupcakes rotated throughout the month," Hein says. Examples: a Black Forest cake, covered in cherry with Italian buttercream; another spread with chocolate ganache covered over by orange frosting, "so you get a little surprise," he promises, when you bite in; and a PB&J cupcake that tastes like a peanut-butter cookie with jelly whipped into cream-cheese frosting. "Our signature cupcake will be a tomato soup cupcake," he adds. "It's really unique, but by far one of the best cupcakes we've tried." No word on whether that will come with a grilled-cheese side.
Inspiration for the name hit as they drove north to their new home last October. "Driving through Cascades, everything was gold," Hein recounts. "Yellow leaves falling in front of the car, yellow leaves everywhere. It was quite a beautiful moment."

Belltown, Capital Hill...which neighborhood is next to be over taken by the cupcake trend. Lake City hopes it's not them.
