Beer Hydrates You Better Than Water
What is this glorious news? Well, some Spanish researchers had some folks run on a treadmill in sweltering temperatures to the point of exhaustion, then had half the group drink water, while the other half drank Spanish lager (two pints, to be exact). And they found that the beer was slightly better at rehydrating our bodies than water! ![]()
As Jonathan Kauffman points out, this study did not include the electrolyte-having specialty waters so many hikers carry around, but this is just one more reason why you shouldn't feel bad about cracking a bottle open post-workout.

Adrenalin Traffic and I were running around Boston yesterday, dropping off demos of his latest remix cd, BRING on the THUNDER. We met the right people, said the right things and got a great response. By 5:30 and having spent a good part of the day washing the heat of city construction dust down with bottles of water I started fading like a fly banging into a bare, flickering 100 watt light bulb. Water just wasn't cutting it for me. As I approached the dregs of my last bottle I heaved it in the nearest garbage can. 10 minutes later I was in the breeze of my apartment with the windows open and the back door ajar. A cold beer brought me back to life. Something water couldn't do. Hats off to Harpoon Beer.
