The Best Block in Spokane: College, Booze, College, Booze, College
I spent a chunk of my week away from the office in Northern Idaho sipping Pabst and napping on large rocks as the rest of my party fished the St. Joe. Paradise, to say the least. When we returned to civilization — if that's what we're calling Spokane, anyway — I discovered a more urban heaven on earth: 1003 E Trent Avenue.
My thumb and Dry Fly.
Wedged around the corner from Gonzaga University and the satellite campuses of WSU and Eastern Washington University is a glorious building/absurd strip mall that includes both Dry Fly Distilling and Northern Lights Brewery. Every college town/block/neighborhood should be so lucky.
Dry Fly currently offers marginal gin and exceptional Vodka — the latter brought home best in show honors for it the San Francisco World Spirit Competition Awards — and will release a 100-percent Washington whiskey on August 7. Yes, co-eds, that's just in time for the fall semester. Upperclassmen already know that you need only drop in for a tour.
While Northern Lights doesn't have quite as much to brag about — they make a good beer, but nothing I was compelled to put in a growler — it is wickedly convenient to be able to taste vodka, gin, and pale ale without moving your car.
