The Top Five Diners in Seattle

With apologies to the cavalcade of Beth's loyalists who are sure to chime in...

5. The Continental. This family-owned University Way institution is best-known for its homemade Greek delicacies, but it's the BLT (on a homemade bun) and bacon in general that allows them to rival more straight-up greasy spoons for this here title. Major bonus points for sharing its name with one of the most random SNL skits ever, starring Christopher Walken.

4. The Shanty. Once a great Seattle P-I hangout with generous portions and even more generous prices, now just a great Elliott Ave. hangout, period, with an ever-intriguing, rotating list of comfort-food specials.

3. Chelan Cafe. Its country benedict and long bar hours give Harbor Island's best-known (only?) full-service eatery the slight edge over the Shanty.

2. The Mecca. Is there a better combination than a lounge that plays really hard rock and a diner that serves food that is ten times better than you'd expect it to be? Not really; hence, the Mecca's silver medal.

1. Randy's. So close to Boeing Field that it's basically on it, Randy's pays homage to the aerospace pioneer by decking out its entire interior with airplane paraphernalia. On food alone, wouldn't crack the top five, but the diner experience is about more than food. It's about color, character, affordability (pancakes can be substituted for toast at no extra charge), service, and durability. The tiebreaker, if one's even necessary: Randy's never closes.
