Obamitas = LOCO
Normally, I am a big fan of the website Eat Me Daily. Their observations about food and culture are sharp and witty, and they consistently put out some of best cookbook and food book reviews around. However, yesterday's Eat Me Daily admission that they are "charmed" by Obamitas, "the artisanal chocolate cookies out of Spain that feature the likeness of President Barack Obama," leaves me scratching my head and saying, "Aw, hell no."
Does this look like President Obama to you?
A while back, Kauffman noted our country's strange obsession with eating the likeness of Obama, but Obamitas (be warned, clicking on this link will deliver you to a disturbing website featuring animated cookies "speaking" with the actual voice of Barack Obama) take things to a whole other level of wrong. Sure, you could say these cookies bear a likeness to Obama...if Obama was a disfigured, bald baby.
For Neos Brand, the Spanish makers of Obamitas, to insist that the cookies "have nothing to do with his color," well, that's almost as sinister as it is laughable. Perhaps Neos' heart is in the right place (they say they want only to "send a message cheerful, positive and generate a smile to those who take the Obamitas"), but please--these are not vanilla cookies. Thank god these things are only available in Spain.
