Celebrate Australia Day @ The Kangaroo and Kiwi

Happy Australia Day!

Happy Australia Day! The folks down under celebrate "the proclamation of British sovereignty over the eastern seaboard of Australia" (thanks, Wikipedia) annually on January 26. In other words, it's a day for Seattle transplants to get shithoused.

The Kangaroo and Kiwi, Greenlake's beloved Aussie watering hole, starts off its party this evening with a barbeque at 5 p.m. and live music from 7-9 p.m.

Also on the schedule is K&K's "Great Aussie Meat Pie challenge" during which patrons compete to see who can gobble down a meat pie and drink a pint of beer the quickest--the winner always clocks in under a minute, according to staff.

The last time I checked out Kangaroo and Kiwi was a chilly Wednesday night--and it took 20 minutes to find a table and 10 minutes longer for the server to clear the massive tower of dirty classes on it. These people don't fuck around when it comes to drinking. I can't imagine how hardcore they are when they have an actual purpose attached to their partying.

Of course, they've got a secret weapon that allows them to make it to work okay the next morning: Berocca. K&K conveniently keeps a stash of the multivitamin tablet that Aussies hail as a miracle hangover cure, as one of the bartenders explains, "It's about as common in our households as a jar of Vegemite. It makes you pee fluorescent yellow--but it's all natural."

Well shit, if it's all natural, there's no excuse not to drink. Cheers, you crazy sheilas and blokes!
