Sweet Freak: Baby Got Stacked
While researching novelty Easter candy last week, I had an epiphany: Why not start a weekly column on new and unusual candy? Not only candy, but any sort of sweet treat. Fortunately, Mike Seely is letting me indulge my sweet tooth to satisfy yours. ![]()
My most recent candy excursion was yesterday at the Jefferson Square Bartell's in West Seattle. Perusing the ever-growing candy aisle, two things stopped me in my tracks; one was a Baby Ruth Crisp (left). The other turned out to be a candy which, while not brand spanking new, deserves a nod.
The Baby Ruth Crisp, which I ate just before starting this post, is delicious. It is reminiscent of my favorite candy bar -- the Whatchamacallit, but with a little less caramel and more of a Baby Ruth taste. It comes split in two, just like a regular Baby Ruth, but this new Crisp is composed of a stack of wafers in addition to the caramel, peanuts and chocolate that the classic Baby Ruth is known for. It's also got a layer of peanut butter creme. I would highly recommend picking one up today.
The other not-so-new candy that I mentioned is the coconut M&Ms. In my opinion, these are better than plain M&Ms, but not quite as good as the peanut variety. What's great about this new coconut flavor is its size. Maybe it's just my imagination, but these newfangled M&Ms seem a bit plumper than the original incarnation. They come in white, green and brown colors and taste like little crunchy Mounds Bars. They're the perfect sweet tooth fix. ![]()
If I had to chose between the Baby Ruth Crisp and the coconut M&Ms, I would probably chose the M&Ms because of the flavor-to-novelty ratio. With that said, if I had a serious chocolate craving, I'd go for the Baby Ruth Crisp. The addition of wafers and peanut butter creme makes this a satisfying candy bar for any chocoholic.
